Until the Indians first laid eyes on these majestic peaks, no one had seen the Black Hills. Beneath the towering granite spires lay undiscovered treasures of clear streams, deep forests, and boundless wildlife. To the Indians, this is where the Great Spirit lived and still lives to this day. When one sees the natural wonders that surround Custer, they’ll understand why the Indians were so enchanted.

In 1874, General George Custer led the 7th Cavalry on a scientific expedition into the Black Hills. His mission was to confirm the growing speculations of gold. After traveling across the rolling Dakota prairie, Custer and his men were welcomed by the splendor of these mystical mountains. From their camp near the present day city of Custer, they found wealth beyond gold : the enduring beauty of the Black Hills.

CUSTER STATE PARK (CSP): A 73,000 acre state park featuring scenic drives, fishing, swimming, camping, hiking, resorts, and an abundance of free roaming wildlife, including over 1,500 head of buffalo.

The best time to see wildlife is early morning or late evening along the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road. Wildlife species include bison, elk, deer, pronghorn, big horn sheep, mountain goats, prairie dogs, and more.

The Needles Highway is a 14-mile drive through granite outcroppings. The drive features spectacular scenery with great views of Custer City, the Needles, Cathedral Spires, and the Needle's Eye. The Iron Mountain Road is the most scenic route to Mount Rushmore and connects Mount Rushmore with Custer State Park. Along the route travelers will pass through tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore in the background.

The Park has two visitor centers open May-October; a variety of naturalist programs including guided nature walks, SD Junior Naturalist Program and evening campfire programs, historic sites like the Gordon Stockade, a replica of the first white settlement in the Black Hills; the Badge Hole, home of Charles "Badger" Clark, South Dakota's first poet laureate, and Mount Coolidge, a fire lookout contstructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
